Rain, fog, snow, and other extreme weather conditions can affect target detection technologies. But how much do they affect radar detection?
How Does Rain Affect Radar Detection?
Radar uses electromagnetic waves to detect and track targets. Compared with optical cameras and infrared systems, radar is generally more resistant to adverse weather conditions.
Heavy rain can cause attenuation and scattering of radar signals. For small targets, the effective detection range may decrease as rainfall intensity increases. However, radar can still provide reliable detection and tracking when visibility is significantly reduced.
What About Fog and Snow?
Fog generally has a limited impact on radar because radar waves can penetrate fog much more effectively than visible light. This gives radar an important advantage in low-visibility environments.
Heavy rain and snow may create additional weather clutter and signal interference. Advanced radar systems can use digital signal processing and weather clutter suppression technologies to distinguish real targets from environmental interference.
YFR-03 for All-Weather Low-Altitude Detection
The YFR-03 Low-Altitude Security Intelligent Detection System combines microwave radar, DBF, mechanical scanning, and multi-target tracking technologies for low-altitude security applications.
YFR-03 supports a detection range of 6–100 km, depending on target RCS and operating conditions, and can detect targets moving at 1–100 m/s. It can simultaneously detect and continuously track multiple low-altitude targets, including drones and other Low, Slow, and Small (LSS) targets.
YFR-03 is available in X-band and Ku-band configurations. X-band offers a balance between detection range and environmental adaptability, while Ku-band provides higher angular resolution for precise detection and tracking.
With advanced signal processing and weather clutter suppression capabilities, YFR-03 is designed to support reliable low-altitude detection in challenging weather conditions. It is suitable for critical area protection, counter-drone operations, border security, and other low-altitude security applications.
